Martha M. Scheckel, Ph.D., R.N., CNE, Vice Dean and Director of the Center for Future Faculty in the Conway School of Nursing at The Catholic University of America, has been elected to the Board of Governors of the National League for Nursing (NLN).

Dr. Scheckel’s election recognizes her national leadership and significant contributions to nursing education, curriculum development, and faculty preparation.

At Conway, she oversees academic programs from the baccalaureate through the doctoral level and is widely recognized for advancing the science of nursing education. She has contributed to major national initiatives, including serving on the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Task Force that helped develop The Essentials: Core Competencies for Professional Nursing Education, a guiding framework for nursing programs nationwide.

Dr. Scheckel has held senior leadership roles at multiple institutions, including the University of St. Thomas and Viterbo University, and brings nearly two decades of experience in academic nursing. Her leadership is grounded in a commitment to faith-based education and respect for the dignity of the human person.

Her research has shaped approaches to curriculum reform and patient-centered care, including work on how nursing students assess suicidal ideation and how patient education can better support rural populations recovering from cardiac surgery. She is also the author of Teaching in Nursing: A Guide for Faculty, an internationally recognized text translated into multiple languages.

Dr. Scheckel has received funding for nursing and behavioral health workforce development through the Health Resources and Services Administration and is a frequent speaker at national and international conferences.

Her election to the NLN Board of Governors highlights both her individual impact and the Conway School of Nursing’s leadership in shaping the future of nursing education.
