Elizabeth Papa, Catholic '25, is a Conway School of Nursing student from Scituate, RI. She chose to study abroad in Rome, Italy.
Why did you want to study abroad?
"I chose to study abroad to broaden my understanding of the world and to push myself outside of my comfort zone."
What was your favorite experience while studying abroad?
"Hands down all the amazing Italian food, meeting and becoming close with amazing people!"
How were you able to immerse yourself in the culture of the country you studied in?
"I was able to immerse myself in the culture by going to local farmers' markets to get lunch food for the week, walking with my friends through the city without a GPS, and trying the most authentic restaurants and cafés recommended by locals."
What did you learn about nursing abroad?
"I learned that the USA is not the only place where people are left without care; it is a global issue. In Rome, I spent time hanging out with residents of a palliative care unit run by religious sisters and got to speak with the leaders of the Pontifical Academy for Life in the Vatican. I have learned how critical care is to even those deemed unworthy of life and where my calling is for my future nursing career."
How were you able to balance your travels with your academics?
"What worked best for me was creating a weekly schedule and dedicating time to study and explore new places every week. Even during weeks with big exams, I would take an evening to walk and try a new restaurant. I discovered the importance of prioritizing moments of productivity, such as dedicating an hour in a local café while traveling."
What advice do you have for future students?
"This seems cliche, but don't take a moment for granted, it goes by so fast."
