Shanna E. Fortune, DNP, CRNP, AGPCNP-BC, FNP-BC, AGACNP-BC is triple board-certified as an Adult Gerontological Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, an Adult Gerontological Primary Care Nurse Practitioner and Family Nurse Practitioner. She has 18 years of nursing experience that includes 10 years as a nurse practitioner (NP). Dr. Fortune was an NP for five years in the Maryland Shock Trauma Center, an internationally renowned trauma center and the primary trauma center for Maryland. Additionally, she practiced as an NP for three years in the University of Maryland Health System on the Cardiac Surgery Intermediate Care Unit and Cardiology consultation service. Prior to becoming an NP, she was a nurse in cardiac care including six years on the cardiovascular surgical critical care unit at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. She is a member of the American College of Cardiology and American Association of Nurse Practitioners.
Dr. Fortune’s research interest include effective handoff communication in healthcare, congestive heart failure, and cardiovascular health in women and minorities. She has published on optimizing pain control and minimizing opioid use in trauma patients and has presented her work at professional conferences. Prior to her appointment to the faculty of Conway School of Nursing, she served as an adjunct faculty member at The University of Maryland, School of Nursing. In preparing the next generation of nurses and nurse practitioners, Dr. Fortune teaches the knowledge and advanced clinical skills needed for excellence in practice, cultural competence and justice. She models nursing and interdisciplinary care that respects the dignity of the human person and treats every patient and family with compassion and empathy.
