Dr. Elizabeth Hawkins-Walsh, Ph.D., R.N., APRN, CPNP, PMHS, is Professor Emerita at The Catholic University of America Conway School of Nursing. Over 33 years of distinguished service, she became a nationally recognized leader in pediatric nurse practitioner (PNP) education, research, and clinical practice. Appointed in 1989 to direct the PNP Program—one of the first in the nation—she shaped it into a model of excellence, pioneering dual primary and acute care certification tracks and guiding graduates to achieve a 100% first-time pass rate on national board certification examinations. She also played a pivotal role in launching the University’s Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Program, serving as its inaugural director.
A widely published scholar, Dr. Hawkins-Walsh has contributed extensively to advancing pediatric nursing education, mental health care, and policy. Her expertise in curricular design has influenced national standards, and her leadership extended to service on the National Academy of Medicine’s Task Force on Children’s Mental Health and the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board’s Primary Mental Health Specialist Exam Committee. Her innovative approaches in integrating behavioral health into pediatric practice have been presented at national conferences and disseminated through key publications, further expanding the role of nurse practitioners in child and adolescent care.
In recognition of her groundbreaking contributions, Catholic University named her the first Ordinary Professor of Practice in 2018, and a scholarship was later established in her honor to support future nurse leaders. Known for her wisdom, compassion, and mentorship, she has been described by colleagues and students as a role model embodying the highest standards of nursing education, research, and practice. Her legacy continues to shape pediatric nursing and inspire the mission of the Conway School of Nursing.
