May 16, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C., May 16, 2025 —The Baccalaureate Mass, one of Catholic University’s most cherished Commencement traditions, will be celebrated on Friday, May 16, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. in the Great Upper Church of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. This solemn liturgy invites graduating students, families, faculty, and staff to gather in prayer and thanksgiving as the University community reflects on the academic and spiritual journey of the Class of 2025.

The Mass serves as a moment of gratitude for the gifts of education, faith, and community—offering graduates an opportunity to center themselves spiritually before Commencement Day. Due to the significance of the celebration, seating is limited, and early arrival is strongly encouraged.

Procession & Instructions for Graduates and Faculty

Graduating undergraduate and graduate students are invited to participate and are asked to wear their academic gowns only—no hoods or caps. Students will assemble in front of McMahon Hall at 3:20 p.m., while members of the administration and faculty gather on the west side of McMahon. The formal procession, led by the University Marshal, will begin promptly at 3:30 p.m.

Faculty participation is warmly encouraged as part of this meaningful academic tradition.

In the event of inclement weather, the procession will form in Memorial Hall, located on the lower level of the Basilica.

Graduates will be guided to their seats by ushers from the Division of Student Affairs. Please note that candidates for degrees do not genuflect in the aisle during this liturgy.

Attendance & Seating

The Baccalaureate Mass is typically standing-room only. Family members and guests planning to attend are encouraged to take their seats as soon as possible following the Honors Convocation for Undergraduates earlier that afternoon.

Livestream

A livestream of the Mass will be available for families and friends unable to attend in person.
